I bought Pigeon idli steamer hotpot cum dhokla maker hot 16 and have used it today. There are some positives such as the removal of the conventional rod through which the idli separators usually fit. This model's separators each have a 'self locking bakelite knob' which is great - looks like its design has some magnetic component to it so you can stack them even without the steamer. The metal of the steamer is not as thin as I expected it to be and it looks good, even if bulky. But there are some defects which have left me dissatisfied as a person who uses the steamer for various things at least 3-4 times a week. First, the steamer needs a whistle like the early models of idli steamers had so the cook is alerted that steam has built up and can put it on sim. Second, the lid is loose and appears to need a gasket which is not there in the design. So steaming is inefficient as the steam never builds sufficiently. In fact, traditional steamers from Udupi region have neither a whistle nor a gasket but the lid is tight fitting hence the quality of steaming is excellent. Third, the pot holders/handles are small for the height of the pot which is much larger My old steaming pot was more compact at 8" (ht) by 11" (w) for 16 idlis (and had a whistle as well as a tight fitting lid). Fourth, due to larger size of the pot, you need to take into account extra storage space 10" (ht) X 14" (w). Fifth, the bakelite knobs on separators require additional attention while washing them since the batter gets stuck around them. This can be a nuisance when you are strapped for time. My old steamer was some 20 years old but deserved retirement since the metal had thinned with use. But I doubt whether this new Pigeon model will give the service my old one did.
